iEngage Student Seminar at the Shalom Hartman Institute

The Fall 2022 iEngage Hartman Seminar will take place December 27- January 3, 2022!

Interested? Fill out the preliminary application below by October 19!

The Shalom Hartman Institute is a pluralistic center of research and education deepening and elevating the quality of Jewish life in Israel and around the world. Through their many programs & initiatives, they are redefining the conversation about Judaism in modernity, religious pluralism, Israeli democracy, Israel and world Jewry, and the relationship with other faith communities.

The iEngage Hartman Seminar aims to deepen the discourse around Israel on campus using Hartman’s iEngage curriculum. The iEngage curriculum creates a new narrative regarding the significance of Israel for Jewish life. This narrative serves as a foundation for a new covenant between Israel and world Jewry, elevating the existing discourse from a crisis-based focus to one rooted in Jewish values and ideas. Led by a team of internationally renowned scholars in the fields of Jewish studies, Middle East politics, and history, iEngage is committed to addressing core questions pertaining to the necessity and significance of the State of Israel.

This year, Berkeley Hillel will be accepting 6-8 students. In addition to on-campus learning, the focal point of the experience is a 6-day seminar that takes place at the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem.  This seminar is a combination of lectures from Hartman scholars, Jewish text study, & trips around Jerusalem.

Commitment:

  • Three on-campus learning sessions before the trip (tbd)
  • Three sessions after the trip
  • Attending the entirety of the seminar in Jerusalem
  • The cost this year will be a heavily subsidized $700 per student, which includes the airfare, hotel stay, food, and cost of the educational program
A few more things…
– Once accepted to the trip, each student will book their own flight (more details to follow). This means that you can extend your stay in either direction, if you’d like!
– UC Berkeley is one of several schools attending the seminar in Jerusalem. There will be about 120 other students from different schools.
This is the preliminary application. From the entries, the Hillel staff will select 6-8 students to go on the trip, at which point more information will come about registering.
