Welcome Week events:

Monday, August 23rd & 24th: New Student Retreat

Location: Monte Toyon Conference Center in Aptos, CA

  • Most of the staff will be in Aptos, CA at our New Student Retreat, which, if you are a new student, you can sign up for at HERE.
  • If you are not on the New Student Retreat, our building will still be open for tours and additional staff will be here to welcome you and to enjoy coffee and bagels on our outdoor deck! Stop by any time between 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to say hi to staff, see the building, and enjoy a bagel!

Wednesday, August 25th: Cafe Ivrit Hebrew Chat at 5 p.m.

Location: Berkeley Hillel First-Floor Courtyard

  • Join our Israeli student and Hebrew-speaking student community to speak Hebrew every week before BBQ on Wednesdays! Enjoy coffee and snacks, practice your Hebrew, and get to know new folks.

  • It’s HERE! Join us at Hillel for the FIRST Hillel BBQ of the year — Hillel BBQs happen EVERY Wednesday! Come to Hillel at 6 p.m. hungry and ready to meet people, and leave with many new friends!

Thursday, August 26th:  Jewish Calendar Learning/Mishmar with Rav Maya at 5 p.m. & Basketball with Rabbi Adam and Micah at 6 p.m.

Location (for Learning/Mishmar): Berkeley Hillel Second-Floor Deck  Location (for basketball): Meet on the front steps of Hillel

  • Jump into the Jewish year with our Senior Jewish Educator, Rav Maya! Whether you’re familiar with the spiral of Jewish time or you’re new to the Hebrew calendar, Rav Maya is excited to kick off a year of learning with our first mishmar, a Shabbat pre-game complete with Torah, singing, and friends
    (Mishmar is Hebrew for “guard,” and is used to refer to this tradition of keeping ‘watch” for Shabbat through learning and singing on Thursday evenings)
  • Do you play basketball? Great! Do you not play basketball? Also great! All are welcome! We’re taking a break from meeting at the building to get to know each other on the court! Join the self-proclaimed Splash Brothers on staff, Rabbi Adam, Hillel’s Executive Director, and Micah, Director of Jewish Student Life, for a friendly game of pickup basketball at 6:00 p.m. We’ll meet at Hillel at 6:00 p.m. and walk to nearby courts. 

Friday, August 27th: Shabbat Experience at Berkeley Hillel starts at 6 p.m.

  • We are excited to offer three soulful ways to bring in Shabbat every week! Find a Kabbalat Shabbat space you love and make it your makom kavua (routine prayer spot), or hop from one option to the next each week! We invite you to join us for two spirited, musical tefillah (prayer) options, or for a weekly creative learning space. See below for descriptions of each of these offerings!   
    • Dov Den Minyan – Here you’ll find musical instruments and a mix of English and Hebrew prayers and songs.  
    • Beit Midrash Minyan – Here you’ll find singing in harmony to a traditional service of Hebrew prayers and songs.  
    • Classroom Minyan – Here you’ll find a creative way to bring in Shabbat each week. Join a staff member for a Kabbalat Shabbat lab, to welcome Shabbat through arts, movement, and learning. 

Monday, August 30th: Upperclassmen Art Event at 6 p.m.

Location: Berkeley Hillel Second-Floor Backyard

  • Join staff and fellow upperclassmen in our backyard (that’s right, bet you didn’t know that Hillel has a backyard) for a chill painting hour! Come with your creative hats on and be ready for a Bob Ross-style evening of outdoor painting and catching up.

Tuesday, August 31st: Bagels on the Glade at 11 a.m.

Location: Memorial Glade, UC Berkeley Campus

  • Join us for an age-old Berkeley Hillel tradition: Bagels on the Glade! Come visit student and staff on the beautiful grass in the center of campus (aka The Memorial Glade) in front of Doe Library, catch up with friends (and meet new ones), and enjoy a tasty bagel!

Wednesday, September 1st: Weekly Kosher BBQ at 6 p.m.

Location: Berkeley Hillel Second-Floor Deck and Courtyard

  • Join us every Wednesday for our famous weekly Kosher BBQ! Come every week to eat tasty Kosher BBQ food (cooked by our talented Kitchen Interns), see your friends, and meet new people! What’s not to love?!

Thursday, September 2nd: Challah for Hunger Braiding and Baking at 6 p.m.

Location: Berkeley Hillel Second-Floor Auditorium (masked event)

  • Enjoy braiding challah? Are you concerned about food insecurity on campus? Join Challah 4 Hunger every Thursday at 6:00 p.m. with 50-60 fellow students who come together to braid and bake Challah in a variety of flavors (chocolate chip, rosemary, and garlic, apple pie). The Challah is then sold ($3 for Challah, $1 for a delicious pretzel bite) to benefit local and national causes working to combat issues of hunger and food security.

Friday, September 3rd: Shabbat Experience at Berkeley Hillel starts at 6 p.m.
